when i say quilting is women's work, i mean that it historically stands in parallel to the investment of gendered and queered people in what it takes to make life ongoingly liveable, or warm enough. quilting accompanies feminised participation in the invisible labours, and mundane stitchwork of the everyday, the tiny actions that constitute the major building project that is relation and family. ironically, it is women's work that creates the historical context or 'stage' upon which History, with a capital H, is generally enacted by men — in perpetual ignorance, of course, of who and what has made their terrible performances possible.
in my quilting, i do not usually cut out my scraps — they are already cut off (as off-cuts). these fabrics constitute the negative space from clothing pattern pieces; they are inversed past productions, soft material actions turned backwards, rewound. a practice of reckoning with the on-cut, or, quilting as consequence?
